Mauricio Pochettino could return to the bench with Athletic Bilbao reportedly interested in signing the former Tottenham Hotspur manager.
The Spanish team is struggling in La Liga this season with just nine points from eight matches, and is reeling in 14th place after a string of inconsistent performances.
He has put pressure on current coach Gaizko Garitano, and according to Football Spain, players like Pochettino, former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde and Valencia coach Marcelino García Toral are in the running to replace him.
Pochettino is a well-known admirer of Athletic Bilbao, and Marca quoted him as saying that the club “generates enormous respect for everything they represent.”
Pochettino’s salary demands and interest from other clubs could make the appointment difficult.
The Argentine is a target for Manchester United and the club reportedly stepped in to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But Sportsmail understands that United is at risk of losing him, as the Argentine has had a conversation with at least one high-profile club in recent weeks with a view to a possible return to work.
Pochettino has been out of work since November last year, when he was fired by Tottenham for a poor run of form, despite reaching the Champions League final the previous season.
