The loyal ladies of the PNP, a volunteer group under the party’s youth wing, have taken to the streets of Suhum to march to stop violence against women in politics.
The decision to mark the day comes after what they say are attacks unleashed against its members four years ago by the Democratic National Congress in Suhum in the run-up to the 2016 elections.
They claim that some thugs allegedly hired by the NDC perpetuated violence against them when they campaigned for votes for Nana Akufo-Addo, standard-bearer of the New Patriotic Party (PNP).
Dressed in NPP paraphernalia, the group amidst the music of a marching band walked the main streets of Suhum to preach against violence in politics.
They were joined by senior party and government officials, including Minister for Affairs Shirley Ayorkor Botwe, Minister for Gender and Social Protection Cynthia Morrison, Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Secretariat, Gifty Oware Aboagye, among many others.
Addressing the ladies at the short rally after the walk, the Gender Minister applauded the group for standing up against the perpetual violence against women in politics.
He described the brutalities unleashed on the group in 2016 as unfortunate and urged political parties to desist from such acts.
“In this modern age, we should not encourage violence against women in politics. It is a matter of sharing ideas and making decisions, so if you do not agree with your opponent, try not to generate violence on him, fighting back and let us know that such attacks can cause loss of life, “he appealed.
For her part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botwe, encouraged the Loyalists to intensify the campaign so that the PNP standard-bearer is elected for a second term.
“My beautiful ladies, the party greatly appreciates the work you are doing, I can only assure you that at the right time you will all be recognized. Let’s all join the campaign to elect the president again.
“That is why I encourage you to move to every corner, to every ghetto, to every room and tell them what the party has achieved in less than three years.” She said.
Speaking to the journalist on the sidelines, the group’s National PRO, Edwina Boamah said that the group will not be discouraged by any act of violence against him.
“We are here to campaign, so that they understand that as women, as young people in politics, we are not ready to withdraw. Once we know what we want for our nation, what we want for our future generation, we will not stop regardless of who wants to drag us down or paralyze our progress, “he said.
