PNP leadership is not working well, says Kwadwo Mpiani | Politics

President Akufo-Addo should ask any minister who has the ambition to become the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (PNP) to resign, said Kwadwo Mpiani, chief of staff in the government of President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Speaking in Radio Asaase On Thursday (March 18), Mpiani said: “The ministers are there because the president appointed them to help him run the country. So if they have decided to become candidates and not ministers at this stage, surely he [Akufo-Addo] You have every right to ask them to go and pursue your ambitions.

“So that you can name someone to do the job entrusted to you by the people of Ghana. I think that is the legitimate thing for any president to do, “he added.

Mpiani spoke about the struggle between cabinet ministers to succeed President Akufo-Addo, describing it as a very worrying development in the ruling New Patriotic Party (PNP).

The former chief of staff advised ministers to support the president to perform well in his second term.

“Look, if you don’t put the party on a solid footing, if the government doesn’t do well, you might even want to put Jesus Christ there. [but] I don’t think I can win. So let’s support the government to do it well, “he said.

“You see, the government is in a very unfortunate situation right now, because of this COVID-19 and everything. The economy is not doing well and it is something universal, ”said Mpiani.

“Therefore, our focus should be on how to perform well, so that when we introduce a candidate, they don’t have too many problems. Instead of doing that, when the government is not even in place, we are thinking about who will replace Nana Addo. It’s a misplaced priority. “

Leadership failure
The former chief of staff does not beat around the bush, describing the internal struggles as a product of a lack of discipline and the failure of the New Patriotic Party leadership.

Mpiani said: “I think the current leadership is not doing well. That is my honest opinion. “

He reflected on the cause and said, “I don’t know why, but maybe [it’s because of] excess of ambition, or perhaps lack of discipline in the game [the NPP]. I think it’s so bad. “

He recounted how the party conducted an investigation to identify which candidates were viable after 17 candidates expressed interest in the race for the party’s standard-bearer position in 2006.

The move, Mpiani said, led the party to put limits on the number of candidates who could run for the PNP leadership.
