Some national and regional executives from the ruling New Patriotic Party stormed into the eastern Akwatia constituency on Sunday for a unity walk, as victory appears uncertain for the party in December.
Among the dignitaries were Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Sammy Awuku, National Organizer of the PNP, and National Women’s Organizer Kate Gyamfua.
Also in attendance were some Eastern Regional Executives, including the Eastern Regional Organizer, Kwame Appiah Kodua, and the Regional Youth Organizer – Jerry Osei-OPoku, as well as some members of the Campaign regional team.
The walk saw a crowd of PNP supporters participating, but conspicuously absent was the bitter member of parliament for Akwatia Mercy Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Sey, who was expected to participate in the event to demonstrate reconciliation and unity.
It is not clear why the MP was not presented. Since then, his mobile phone has been switched off.
Firebrand Ohene Agyapong, who addressed supporters, said they hoped the MP and her husband would participate in the walk by having approached them at the house.
However, Kennedy Agyapong advised parliamentary candidate Ernest Kumi to personally go to the MP for advice on how he managed to gain ground in Akwatia and learn from her if he wants to be successful in his political career.
On October 9, 2020, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Akwatia, the popular Mercy Adu Gyamfi known as Ama Sey officially announced her retirement from the parliamentary race as an independent candidate.
The deputy was expected to submit her nomination form, but overruled her decision stating that many dignitaries addressed her, including President Akufo Addo and his wife Rebecca Akufo Addo, Okyenhene and some pastors.
“I asked the PNP to do a recount after the primaries, but they ignored it; however they did it for a candidate in Asamankese, my supporters got angry and decided to support me to run as an independent candidate because the party was not fair to me. My followers were angry. I agreed to become an Independent because I was bitter about the number of people who called me, ”she said at a press conference Friday in Akwatia.
She added: “President Akufo-Addo called me, his wife called me, the chief of staff called me, Okyenhene, the head of Juabeng, the pastors and many other dignitaries called to speak to me. So I have decided not to submit my nomination form as EC closes the submission today ”.
“It is painful that they deceive you and if pain afflicts you and you do not make the decision to prevent it, it will continue but as they have spoken to me I have decided to remain calm and rescind my decision. I know that many are still angry in Akwatia, I beg you to put the past behind. “
Akwatia Mercy Member of Parliament Adu Gyamfi had earlier boycotted a mini rally held for President Akufo-Addo during his visit to Akwatia as part of his four-day campaign tour of the eastern region.
Supporters of the parliamentarian chanted a war song to show their displeasure when the PNP parliamentary candidate, Ernest Kumi, stepped onto the platform to address them in the presence of President Akufo Addo and his entourage.
