Dominic Calvert-Lewin marked his England debut with a goal when Gareth Southgate’s experimental team defeated a much-changed Wales in a friendly at empty Wembley.
Despite being a rare encounter of two old rivals, both teams clearly had more than one eye on their upcoming Nations League matches.
Bukayo Saka also made his senior debut when Everton striker Calvert-Lewin was named in attack, leading the Three Lions before Conor Coady and Danny Ings added their first goals for England to secure a 3-0 win.
Sportsmail’s Sami Mokbel rated the players’ performances.
ENGLAND (3-4-3)
NICK PAPA
An accomplished performance from the Burnley goalie. His chances of overtaking Jordan Pickford as England’s number one did not hurt. 7
JOE GOMEZ
A Rolls Royce of a footballer who is not at the top of his game but who still went through this crash before being a substitute. 6.5
CONOR COADY
He has thrown himself into international football like a duck overboard. He followed up his impressive debut last month with another fine display of his first goal. 8
MICHAEL KEANE
He has started the season impressively at Everton and took that form on the international stage. He did the basics well and the economy in possession. 7
TRIPPIER KIERAN
One of the proudest nights of the full-back career, captaining England for the first time. He ended his big night with a brilliant attendance. 7
HARRY WINKS
Silently he went about his business in the engine room in England. Southgate trusts the Tottenham man and will be happy that his midfielder is injured. 7.5
KALVIN PHILLIPS
An energetic display in the central midfield. A much more skillful performance compared to his England debut against Denmark last month. 7.5
BUKAYO SAKA
He slowly grew up in the game after a shaky start. It was a bit ahead in terms of positioning, but it will be better for this experience. 7
JACK GREALISH
He finished his full international debut with exceptional attendance. An unforgettable night for the Aston Villa skipper, one of the best players on the field. 8.5
DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN
I can’t stop, it won’t stop dialing. What an international debut for the Everton forward. His tenth goal of the first season will not be forgotten. 8
DANNY INGS
He did not give the defenders of Wales a minute’s peace and capped an excellent performance with a brilliant kick from above. 7.5
SUBS: Mount 6.5 (for Calvert-Lewin 58); James 6.5 (for Trippier 58); Mings 6.5 (for Gomez 58); Ward-Prowse (Winks 76); Barnes (Grealish 76); Maitland-Niles (Saka 76)
Unused subs: Henderson, Rashford, Alexander-Arnold, Maguire, Pickford, Rice.
GARETH SOUTHGATE
His inexperienced crew blew hot and cold, but that was to be expected. He will be happy with the victory but the real test will come on Sunday against Belgium. 7
WALES (4-2-3-1)
Hennessey 7; C Roberts 6 (Gunter 73), Rodon 6 (Cabango 46, 6), Mepham 6, Davies 6.5; Ampadu 6.5 (Vaulks 62, 6), Morrell 5.5 (Levitt 46, 5.5); T Roberts 6, J Williams 6.5 (Smith 73), Matondo 6.5; Moore 6.5 (N. Williams 40, 6). Subsidiaries: Davies, Gunter, Ward, James, Woodburn, Norrington-Davies, Johnson, Smith. Warned: Roberts, Ampadu, Levitt
Trainer: Giggs: 6
Referee: Bobby Madden (SCO) – He was pretending to be a friendly but had to brandish three yellow cards, all for Wales. 6
