Player ratings as Die Roten takes a big step towards the Bundesliga title

A goal from Leon Goretzka in the first half gave Bayern Munich a crucial 1-0 victory at RB Leipzig to increase their lead at the Bundesliga summit to seven points, and put a hand on the Meisterschale.

The hosts started the match in spectacular fashion, but it was Bayern who broke the deadlock as they progressed through the game. Thomas Muller picked up a ball from Joshua Kimmich over the top, and threw it back so that Goretzka slammed into the top corner.

Leipzig saw most of the ball after the break and pushed for an equalizer, but Bayern’s bottom line held firm and never gave them clear chances. The Bavarians put defense first and saw a 1-0 victory, taking them seven points away from their hosts at the top of the Bundesliga, which could end the title race.

Now, let’s go to the ratings of the Topspiel players …

Peter Gulacsi (GK) – 6/10 – He couldn’t do anything about Goretzka’s thunderous finish, but he made a couple of good saves throughout the game.

Nordi Mukiele (RB) – 6/10 – He scored and closed the door on Kingsley Coman well, but was not as efficient going forward, not delivering real quality in the box.

Willi Orban (CB) – 7/10 – He read the game brilliantly and handled the Bayern runners well, recovering seven balls and a pair of punts.

Dayot Upamecano (CB) – 6/10 –
He composed himself on the ball, often knocking it off defense and was strong defensively, attacking in vital moments to deny Bayern’s forwards.

Lukas Klostermann (LB) – 5/10 –
Unusually reluctant to step up and prevail in the final third. He was obviously worried about Leroy Sane and was a bit overrun by the extreme at times.

Marcel Sabitzer and Joshua Kimmich

Tyler Adams (CM) – 5/10 – Pressed high and energetically, often recovering the ball to establish quick moves, but lost the physical battle with Goretzka in midfield.

Marcel Sabitzer (CM) – 5/10 –
It did some good darts in advanced areas, but it was pretty quiet and only produced quality sporadically. He also left a bit of a foul on defense at times, particularly without following Goretzka in preparation for the opening goal.

Dani Olmo (AM) – 10/6 –
Another found it difficult in midfield, but he was very tenacious throughout and seemed dangerous. Unfortunately, he took advantage of opportunities that should have grown the network.

Niklas Suele, Emil Forsberg

Christopher Nkunku (RW) – 5/10 – He started very well, hitting a couple of big crosses into the area, but quickly faded and didn’t improve when he got into the center, not registering a shot on goal or a key pass.

Emil Forsberg (ST) – 4/10 – Played as a false nine, drifting deep to catch the ball, but battled intense pressure from Bayern. Hooked into the break without registering a single shot or key pass.

Amadou Haidara (LW) – 6/10 – He didn’t stop running and nipping at his opponents’ heels, but couldn’t make an impact on the field without feeling confident in his weaker left foot.

Justin Kluivert (RW) – 6/10

Yussuf Poulsen (ST) – 5/10

Alexander Sorloth (ST) – 5/10

Hee-Chan Hwang (ST) – N / A

Ibrahima Konate (CB) – N / A

Manuel Neuer (GK) – 6/10 – As usual, he was very comfortable on his feet and always gave those in front of him an option to avoid the press. He wasn’t forced to use his hands that much.

Benjamin Pavard (RB) – 6/10 –
He didn’t have time or space, so he couldn’t find his passing range, but he remained solid at the back, winning most of his aerial battles.

Niklas Sule (CB) – 7/10 –
Leipzig proved difficult to miss, making six ball recoveries at all times, while also playing some good balls from the back towards his midfielders.

David Alaba (CB) – 7/10 – He often came in to quickly hit the ball as he entered opposition attackers and timed his tackles well, recovering four balls. He also came off defense excellently, relieving the pressure.

Lucas Hernández (LB) – 9/10 –
A really solid show in the back. Most of Leipzig’s moves came from his side and the left-back held his ground, making a whopping 11 interventions at all times.

Joshua Kimmich (CM) – 10/7 – It wasn’t as influential as it can be, but it became the game as time went on and it began to dictate the game from deep within. He helped create the goal with a magnificent ball over Muller.

Leon Goretzka (CM) – 10/9 –
He matched and improved Leipzig’s physique and power in midfield and enjoyed the battle. He made eight ball recoveries and finished sensationally to catch the winner.

Thomas Muller (AM) – 7/10 – Roam free and found space brilliantly. He managed to work his way up the canals and provided a final product, helping Goretzka, or SCOREtzka, for the opener.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Tyler Adams

Leroy Sané (RW) – 7/10 – Sometimes he found himself surrounded, but he did well to advance and threaten when possible, making a key pass. He also worked hard to track down and assist his defensive teammates.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (ST) – 6/10 – He was isolated for the most part, but overall he had a decent game. He held the ball well for others to come into play and made some very good moves that could have been dangerous.

Kinglsey Coman (LW) – 6/10 – He was brilliant throughout and actually did well defensively, reading the game to recover a couple of balls up high. However, he was unable to get past the Leipzig baseline and impact proceedings as he would have liked.

Jamal Musiala (CM) – 6/10

Serge Gnabry (LW) – 6/10

Javi Martínez (CM) – N / A
