Plastics recycling: global markets – Scientect

[ad_1]

Summary:

The global market for post-consumer plastics recycling reached CENSORED in 2019. The market was created by recycling CENSORED pounds of post-consumer plastics, plus CENSORED prior to processing. The average price of raw post-consumer plastic waste was approximately REDACTED per pound in 2019. After processing, the price rose to REDACTED per pound, producing a gross profit of REDACTED per pound. Weight loss occurs in plastic waste processing, reducing total volume to approximately CENSORED pounds in 2019. The average price of recycled plastics sold to end users was, in fact, CENSORED per pound.

In 2019, the global plastic recycling industry rebounded to nearly the 2017 level (pounds REDUCED) before China began banning its import of post-consumer plastics in January 2018, a significant increase from pounds REMOVED in 2018. Three factors contributed to the rapid recovery of the global plastic recycling market –
– Europe significantly improved its ability to recycle locally collected plastic waste, increasing the volume processed by more than four billion pounds per year between 2017 and 2019.
– China has a huge appetite for recycled plastics. Vietnam, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and many other countries set up facilities to produce recycled pellets and sell them to the Chinese market.
– Most other countries also increased national recycling capacity.

In 2020, the global plastic recycling business was hit hard by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The collection and recycling of recyclable waste has been widely suspended. Recycled volume plummeted by REDACTED in some countries in the first half of 2020. China and some other countries have recovered rapidly from the pandemic, so the global market will decline only REDACTED, overall, in 2020. There are two main sources of post-consumer plastics for recycling: non-durable products and durable products. Non-durable products are mostly plastic bottles, containers, and films. Durable products include plastics used in electronics, carpets, automotive products, and other industrial and commercial products.

Scope of the report:

For the purposes of this report, the term recycling refers to the removal of products from the waste stream for use (not including incineration or energy recovery). It is assumed that any secondary use or reuse of the material has already been made. The term recovery includes all disposal methods except land-based disposal (ie recycling, incineration, waste-to-energy). [WTE]).

The term chemical recycling will be used to describe the return to the chemical units originally used to make resins. Nylon can be depolymerized to caprolactam. The term raw material recycling will be used to denote the process of breaking down plastics into a mix of organic chemicals, some used in the manufacture of plastics and some not. Raw material recycling products are more similar to raw materials used to produce plastics (eg oil, natural gas).

Mechanical recycling methods include those that involve physical modifications to the recovered plastic only, such as separation, shredding, and sorting.

This report will address activities in four regions: North America, Europe, Asia, and Rest of the World (RoW). All figures are expressed to an accuracy of a million dollars or a million or a billion pounds. The growth rates indicated are compound annual growth rates (CAGR) for the period 2019-2025. All stated value figures are in constant 2019 US dollars.

The market data in the tables in this report only covers post-consumer plastics. Post-industrial plastics are not included.

This report is divided into several sections. The Introduction section summarizes the goals and objectives of the study, the reasons for conducting the study, and the scope. The Summary and Highlights section provides a summary of the 2019-2025 global plastic recycling market estimates and forecasts and highlights of the largest and fastest growing markets and important trends.

The Overview section describes the manufacturing of plastics, the main types of plastics used, how plastics are disposed of after use, and a summary of recycling methods.

The Global Market section describes existing markets by product source. Recycled waste products include bottles, vehicles, carpets, and electronics. This section covers topics such as the amount of plastic collected and recycled annually from these sources. When possible, it provides a prediction regarding the likely growth rate over the next five years.

The Global Market section also looks at plastic recycling by resin, outlining the sources and end uses of the recycled materials that are available. Most of the recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) comes from PET bottles and the main end market for resin from recycled PET bottles is fibers.

The Global Market section also profiles products made from recycled plastics, including applications such as wood plastic and plastic composites (eg, wood, fibers, cement, glass). Products are covered separately; products can be made of plastic from a combination of sources. Wood / fiberglass composites can be made from several different types of resins, each possibly derived from several different products.

Following the global market sections, there will be four chapters discussing regional plastic recycling markets: North America, Europe, Asia, and RoW.

The Company Profiles section lists the relevant organizations and companies.

The Appendix provides definitions of abbreviations and acronyms.

Market values and volumes have specific measures.

Market values are measured at the recycled plastic level, like the values of recycled resin pellets.
Market volumes by end use or application are measured at the levels of both the amount of plastic available for recycling and the amount of plastic that is recycled.
Market volumes by waste source (eg bottles, films) are measured at the level of the amount of plastic available for recycling.
Market volume is segmented by types of waste resin (eg PET, PE) and measured at the level of the amount of plastic available for recycling.
