Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué admits times are tough for the Catalans at the moment, but expects an improvement after the emergence of younger players.
Bartomeu and his board of directors left the club last week after six years in office to avoid a vote of no confidence from the members, leaving a legacy of many trophies, but a steady decline in results and a desperate financial situation.
“It was obvious that the club was on a downward trend and that each year things got a little worse than the last,” Piqué said after his team won 2-1 over Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League on Wednesday.
“We all know the situation the club is in at the moment, we are going through a process of change that was very necessary.”
The club is currently in the hands of interim president Carles Tusquets, and elections will be held in the next three months, but Piqué said the instability is no excuse for the team’s inconsistent performances of late.
Although they have a 100% Champions League record, the Catalans have gotten off to a lousy start in La Liga and have failed to win their last four games.
“There is no transition year in Barcelona. We don’t have much time to make changes, but we have to do it if we want to improve, ”he said.
“A new board of directors and president is coming soon and things will change in the coming months.”
Piqué also admitted that his team is no longer among the top contenders for winning the Champions League following their recent performance in the competition, most notably the humiliating 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in August.
But he was optimistic about the future of the team, thanks to the emergence of exciting young talents like Ansu Fati and Pedri.
“It is normal that people no longer believe that we are candidates after the last few years, but all we can do is keep working. We have a good team full of good people and we have a lot of talent, ”he said.
“We have a lot of new and young faces that bring a lot of dynamism to the team. I can tell you from experience that the results will come soon. We believe that we can still do great things. “
