Barcelona have confirmed that Gerard Piqué has suffered injuries to the medial and cruciate ligament of the knee.
The defender was involved in a freak collision with Ángel Correa during Barcelona’s loss to Atlético de Madrid in La Liga on Saturday.
After receiving treatment, Piqué left the field in the Wanda Metropolitano crying, which suggested that the problem was serious.
Barça has confirmed that this is the case, and the club has issued a statement on Twitter that read: “The evidence shows that Piqué has a grade three sprain of the medial lateral ligament and a partial injury to the anterior cruciate ligament of the right knee. The evolution will determine the future availability.”

No time period has been mentioned regarding its absence, but a cruciate ligament injury, even partial, would suggest a period of months on the side rather than weeks.
The absence of such an important defender will be a hard blow for Barça coach Ronald Koeman.
At 33 years old, Piqué is in the later stages of his career, but he remains a dominant presence in the heart of the Blaugrana defense, so losing him before what is an intense period of the season will be remarkable.
In addition to revealing Piqué’s injury, Barça also confirmed that Sergi Roberto faces two months on the sidelines due to a thigh injury.
“The tests carried out this Sunday on Sergi Roberto have shown that he has a tear in the rectus femoris of his right thigh”, read a statement of the club. “The approximate time he will be out is two months.”
Barça’s defeat against Atlético leaves him tenth in the table, with 11 points to his name in eight games.
The Catalans will travel to Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League. After the trip to Ukraine, Barça has a streak of eight games (Osasuna, Ferencvaros, Cádiz, Juventus, Levante, Real Sociedad, Valencia and Valladolid) before a week-long break during the Christmas period.
It is a streak of matches that will mark his league season. Koeman’s team is well placed to advance to the Champions League round of 16, having racked up three wins in as many Group G games, but potentially being out of the national title race before Christmas will not. It would be good for Catalonia.
