Petr Cech’s return to action for Chelsea did not work out as he would have hoped, as he conceded two goals in a 3-2 victory over Tottenham in Premier League 2.
The Blues retired from the professional ranks in 2019, after a couple of seasons at Arsenal, but returned to Chelsea’s coaching staff later that year.
In October this year, his name was surprisingly on Chelsea’s 25-man Premier League squad, and the club confirmed it was included as emergency cover.
Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero are ahead of Cech in the pecking order of goalkeepers, making it unlikely that he will secure playing time in the first team.
However, he was named a starter against Tottenham in the Premier League 2 game on Monday night.
Cech, who made 494 appearances during an 11-year career at Chelsea that earned him 13 medals, was the high-profile figure on the field, but got off to a poor start when he conceded in three minutes.
The goalkeeper had little chance of avoiding the effort of Jubril Okedina, which came after a ball from a corner returned to the area.
However, disappointingly for Cech, the corner came after his attempt to pass to a teammate went straight for a corner.
Tottenham completely dominated in the first half and Cech fell in again in the 17th minute.
He started to come and pick up a Harvey White cross, but the ball was too fizzy and Cech was in no-man’s-land when Dane Scarlett beat him with an excellent header.
Cech was embarrassed with his distribution before the first goal and was nearly red-faced again with a sloppy pass, but a Tottenham attack was stopped by a foul.
Chelsea improved a lot after the break and quick goals from Marcel Lewis and Myles Peart-Harris tied them.
Cech had little to do in the second half, his only maneuver coming when he caught a cross in injury time, until the 73rd minute when a massive brawl erupted after a poor tackle from Alfie Devine on Danny Drinkwater.
Both players received red cards, and Cech came out to act as a peacemaker and escort Tottenham’s young Devine to ensure he didn’t get into any more trouble.
Chelsea continued to dominate, and scorers Lewis and Peart-Harris combined for the winner in 88 minutes, with the former slashing the ball for the latter to shoot home and send the Blues to the top of the table.
Cech wasn’t the only legendary name to pop up on the Kingsmeadow field, as Maurizio Pochettino, son of former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, came in as a late substitute for Spurs.
