As one of the most personable figures in football, it’s hard to imagine Peter Crouch losing his cool.
But the former forward has admitted the only player who got on his nerves during a 21-year career.
During his second spell at Tottenham, Crouch was part of Harry Redknapp’s team that took the Champions League by storm, delivering memorable performances against Inter Milan, before knocking out rivals AC Milan in the round of 16.
However, it was against José Mourinho’s Real Madrid that their European odyssey came to a halt in the quarter-finals, with a 4-0 defeat in the first leg at the Bernabéu that gave them the decisive blow to advance further.
That match saw Crouch sent off in the first half after two bookings in quick succession. And the 39-year-old has spoken of his desire to strike a blow of his own after the antics of winger Marcelo.
Speaking on Paddy Power’s From the Horses Mouth podcast, Crouch said: ‘The locker room is under the stadium and there are levels and levels of fans and you can hear them. I’m sitting in the locker room with a towel on my head, listening to goal after goal after goal and I think: ‘that depends on me’. That was a low point and a great regret.
However, I have a little excuse when it comes to letters. The first was that I was excitable, so I can give that to the referee. It was an entry to Sergio Ramos.
‘For the second, I went to block a ball on Marcelo’s line and dived a bit, but didn’t touch him.
“ He jumped in the air and rolled, and there is a camera angle where you can see that he looks at the referee and celebrates when the red card comes out and then he jumps again. ”
More than the red card or the plunge, it was the Brazilian’s celebration while sitting on the floor that really ended the former England star.
I’ve never wanted to hit anyone else in my life! added. For them, that was seen as a victory.
‘They have won the game and they played me. I was naive to get caught up in it. ”
