Peter Crouch praised the VAR’s work after he correctly overturned a penalty decision awarded to Wolverhampton Wanderers for a foul by Liverpool’s Sadio Mane on Conor Coady.
At the end of the first half of the Wolves’ trip to Anfield, defender Coady fell to Mane’s challenge and Craig Pawson pointed the spot, leaving Liverpool players and fans furious with the call.
Replays showed there was no contact between Mane’s boot and Coady’s and after a review on the VAR monitor, Pawson overturned the decision and awarded Liverpool a free kick.
Former Reds forward Crouch noted that this is the reason VAR was introduced, as he believed at first glance that there was contact between the two players.
Crouch told Amazon Prime Sport: ‘VAR has worked like a dream tonight. When it happens in real time, I thought of “penalty” like most people did, but Mane retires.
‘The reaction of the Liverpool players (says it all), the fans were outraged. Conor Coady looked a bit embarrassed and the right decision was made.
His Amazon Prime teammate Mark Clattenburg, who spent 13 years as a Premier League referee between 2004 and 2017, claimed the only criticism for officials was that Coady did not receive a yellow card for diving.
Clattenburg said: ‘What surprises me is that he was not booked. This is a clear dunk and he tried to fool the referee and should have given him a yellow card for simulation ‘
Defender Coady had already given Liverpool the lead after his mistake allowed Mohamed Salah to open the scoring for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Wolves captain tried to hit a long ball forward when it would have been easier to head it in and his takedown was picked up by the Liverpool forward who slipped into the goal.
In the Amazon Prime study, Roberto Martínez claimed that Coady’s mistake was “uncharacteristic” of him given his impressive start to the season.
‘It’s indecision. He felt that he had more time than him. The Wolves were fit and kept Liverpool out of chances, but all Conor Coady has to do is clear the ball. It is a simple ball to defend.
It is very uncharacteristic of him. I was impressed with how he has adapted to international football and with the Wolves this season. “
