Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Peter Crouch revealed how much he wanted to “hit” Marcelo during his team’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Real Madrid in 2011.
The towering leader, now a media personality, was sent off after just 14 minutes of the north London 4-1 setback against Los Blancos, but feels the Brazilian left-back was responsible.
“The first yellow card was that I was excitable, so I can give that to the referee,” Crouch told Paddy Power’s ‘From the Horse’s Mouth’ podcast.
“For the second, I went to block a ball on Marcelo’s line and dived a little bit, but I didn’t touch him.
“He jumped in the air and rolled, and there is a camera angle where you can see that he looks at the referee and celebrates when the red card comes out, then he jumps again.
“I’ve never wanted to hit anyone else in my life! To them, that was seen as a victory.
“They won the game and they played me. I was naive to get caught up in it.”
Real Madrid were already 1-0 when Crouch was sent off, with Emmanuel Adebayor having put Los Merengues ahead.
The Togolese forward went on to have one of his best nights in the Real Madrid shirt, scoring a double against a team containing Gareth Bale and Luka Modric.
Ángel Di María and Cristiano Ronaldo joined the scoreboard to give Real Madrid a foot in the semifinals.
Crouch had to suffer it all from the bowels of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
“The dressing room is under the stadium and there are levels and levels of fans and you can hear them,” he said.
“I’m sitting in the locker room with a towel over my head, listening to goal after goal after goal and thinking, ‘That’s my thing.’ That was a low point and a great regret.”
