Nicolas Pepe’s red card was the first of his career
Arsenal forward Nicolas Pepe was sent off for a header when Leeds’ extravagance cost them a Premier League victory.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds squandered a number of chances, both before and after Pepe was sent off after a video consultation with the assistant referee for sticking his head in Ezgjan Alioski’s face.
Substitutes Rodrigo, Patrick Bamford and Raphinha, in injury time in their first Premier League start, nailed it.
The Gunners were poor once again, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s effort in the 60th minute was the first of two shots on target.
He has scored a Premier League goal, an Aubameyang penalty against Manchester United, in five games since 4 October.
Both teams entered the game out of shape, with three losses in their previous four league games.
Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa will be happy with his team’s performance, barring the finish, with opponent Mikel Arteta relieved to score a point.
Arsenal remain in the lower half of the table, climbing to 11th place, two points above Leeds at 14th.
Leeds cheerleaders forget their final boots
Leeds were the first promoted Premier League team to score 14 goals in their first eight games since Charlton in 2000.
They could have used some of those goals at Elland Road, with just four of their 25 shots on target.
His three attempts against wood all came from minute 79 onwards.
Rodrigo’s 18-yard shot hit the angle of the bar and post, Bamford headed the post and Raphinha crashed a shot into the same post at the end.
Bamford had scored seven goals this season, but this time he didn’t look at the song, with two shots in a row to Bernd Leno in the first half.
Winger Raphinha, the first Brazilian to start a Premier League game with Leeds since Roque Junior in 2003, was animated and approached from the edge of the area, with Stuart Dallas forcing a good save from Leno.
On another day Leeds could have scored five but have only one point to show for their efforts and have only won once in their last six Premier League matches.
Worrying times for Arsenal
The good vibes around Arsenal when they won the FA Cup and started this season with three wins in all competitions is starting to feel like a distant memory.
Arteta has helped solidify his defense, but has only scored nine goals in nine league games this season. That’s the lowest figure at this stage since 1986-87.
Aubameyang had a rare opportunity to play as their main forward, with Alexandre Lacazette on the bench, but Arsenal struggled to create many clear chances.
It took him an hour to put Illan Meslier to the test, whose only other stop was to deny substitute Bukayo Saka later.
The Gunners had a penalty appeal when Liam Cooper blocked Aubameyang’s shot with his elbow, but the VAR team ruled it was not handball.
Arsenal, who only had 33.7% of the ball, held on, especially after Pepe’s red card.
The Ivorian, who has rarely justified his £ 75 million fee, had an ongoing battle with Alioski and eventually lost his temper with a ‘football header’.
Alioski fell to the ground and Pepe was sent off for the first time in his career.
Arsenal are kings of the red card under Arteta – match statistics
- This was only Leeds’ third goalless draw in 101 league games with Bielsa. Since Bielsa took over at Leeds in 2018, he has kept 41 clean sheets in 101 league games (excluding play-offs), more than any other team in the top four. English league levels at this time Arsenal have failed to score in four of their last five league games, this after having done so in just three of Arteta’s first 24 Premier League games in charge. Leeds is the most of all unmarked teams in the Premier League since Manchester City’s 26th against Southampton in July. They are only the third team to have as many shots in the league this season Since Arteta joined Arsenal in December 2019, the Gunners have received five Premier League red cards, at least two more than any other club in this time.
