Pep Guardiola insists Liverpool are still in the running for the Premier League title despite Manchester City holding a 13-point lead with one game in hand.
Liverpool’s hopes of defending their position as Premier League champions appear to be in tatters, as they conceded three goals in the space of seven minutes during their 3-1 loss to Leicester City on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp even admitted that Liverpool’s title streak could have ended after suffering their sixth league loss of the season.
Speaking after Liverpool’s dramatic second-half collapse against Leicester, Klopp said: ‘Yes, I’m conceding. I don’t think we can close the gap. We don’t care about the title, we are not stupid. “
However, Guardiola takes nothing for granted despite beating Tottenham 3-0 to move away 13 points from his rivals.
He said: ‘From what I saw from the way they played Leicester, we would have to lose matches, but of course they can.
‘It is the same Liverpool that I have known in recent years. In the pits they are not as clinical as before, but the quality of their game is still there ”.
Guardiola also admitted his joy with his players after dominating Tottenham.
He said: ‘It was well deserved. The way we wanted to play, the focus, it was there.
“Tottenham have a special quality and when we have played in the last two or three years at Tottenham we played well, we created many chances, and they had two or three chances and we lost 2-0.
‘So they don’t need anything to create opportunities. This is due to its quality. But we have a special way of playing and it doesn’t matter, this is how we are going to play, but we must be patient, patient, patient.
“The first five minutes were better, then the first time we arrived we scored, which sometimes happens, and we went on to control the game, so yes well deserved.”
Rodri opened the scoring from the penalty spot for City, however it was Ilkay Gundogan who provided a double in the second half.
Guardiola praised Gundogan’s performance and said he could win the player of the month again if he continues in good shape.
He said: ‘I am more than delighted with his performance,’ Guardiola said. “He won the player of the month last month and if he continues to play like that, he will win it again.”
