Assiduous work is under way to finalize all pending negotiations on the African Continental Free Trade Agreement before the end of the year.
These negotiations, which are part of the necessary conditions to ensure the success of the program, have faced challenges from member countries despite the initiation of the agreement.
The director of Services of the Secretariat of African Continental Free Trade, Emily Mboru-Ndoria, assured that the pending rules that include the protocol on the trade of goods and services will be completed this year.
“The differences of interests of several member countries of the African Union have been a great challenge for the finalization of the rules and pending negotiations for the continental free trade agreement.
The development, although under control, may roll back the goal of having a common Customs Union like Africa, ”he revealed at the Graphic Stanbic breakfast meeting in Accra under the theme, Leveraging AFCFTA, the critical success factors.
“You know that the size of an SME in South Africa may not be the same as Niger or Ghana, so everyone is trying to fight their interests to make sure they get the best,” he added.
“However, we are working with all member countries so that they are all at the same level,” he said.
The Technical Director of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Anthony Nyame Baafi, assured the business community that Ghana is working together with the African Union to use all available channels to address their concerns.
The main sponsor of the event, Stanbic Bank, believes that such platforms have become essential for the harmonization of Africa.
