Life can be full of twists and turns, something that at only 23 years old Pedro Guilherme Abreu dos Santos knows very well. The Flamengo star, who has scored ten goals in 18 games this season, has savored the sweetness of success and the bitterness of disappointment in almost equal measures.
The forward has just been called up for the Brazilian senior team and has won the coveted No. 9 jersey, but his journey has not been entirely easy. “I joined Flamengo at the age of eight and combined futsal and soccer 11 until they fired me at 14,” Pedro said. “I was without a club for a while until, at 16, I signed for Duquecaxiense in Serie C,” he recalled on Canal Zico 10. After becoming champion and top scorer for Duquecaxiense, he finally signed for Fluminense after a long test. “I was on probation for four months and, when I was 18, I made it to the Fluminense first team,” said Pedro.
He made his Fluminense debut, in a twist of fate, in a win over Flamengo in 2016 and in 2018 was named the Brasileirao’s top scorer and ‘Revelation’ … despite getting injured mid-season. The seven months that he had to miss due to that injury to the anterior cruciate ligament frustrated his first call-up to the senior team and a possible signing for Real Madrid of Julen Lopetegui. “At that time, we had reached an agreement with Real Madrid. We had spoken with his family and with Fluminense. The only thing missing was the signature,” recalled agent Marcio Giugni.
Opportunity to move to Europe
The opportunity to move to Europe reappeared the following summer and he signed for Fiorentina in September 2019 for € 11 million.
However, opportunities were hard to come by in Serie A, and in January 2020 he was sent back to his homeland, on loan to Flamengo.
The club that was his first love and then discarded it would prove to be his salvation. With 20 goals in 37 games, Pedro has won an international call-up and Flamengo is desperate to complete his loan.
Pedro is not in the mold of the typical Brazilian striker – Romario, Bebeto or Ronaldo – but he is more like a classic center forward who knows how to use his height and physical presence to benefit his team and torment opposing defenders.
He can hold the ball, play with his back to goal, and links play well, acting as a focal point in attack. He really shines in the penalty area, though, with great touch and timing and an ability to shoot off with either foot.
