Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as “A Plus”, a staunch supporter and now enemy of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has stated that the loan that the Government of Ghana paid to boxer David Kotei [DK Poison] it should have been paid with interest.
He added that he cannot understand why the retired boxer should receive the initial amount he loaned to the country in 1976 without any interest.
DK Poison, the first Ghanaian boxer to win an international title, had been chasing the money for all this time, but on Tuesday President Akufo-Addo ordered the Finance Ministry to repay the loan.
DK Poison said that he won a purse of $ 75,000 in an international fight, but was paid an amount of 34,000 old cedis, through a transfer at the then Barclays Bank, which equaled $ 30,000 at the time.
The loan to Colonel IK Acheampong’s administration was advanced purely on the basis of a gentlemen’s agreement with officials of the then military administration in Tokyo, Japan, where DK Poison won his second defense of the title against Shigefumi Fukuyama.
A Plus, reacting to the news, praised President Akufo-Addo for the move, but insisted that the Ghanaian government should pay Poison with interest.
She wrote on her Facebook timeline: “Nana Addo has done well in returning the money that DK Poison loaned to Ghana. But look, if you were a politician that the government owed for so long, they would have calculated the interest or even paid the court debt. You borrowed from someone 44 years ago to save an economy that was on the brink of collapse. After 44 years of putting him in hell, why would you give him the same amount? At least montwa not 100k dollars. ”
A Plus continued: “No government made any effort to pay him, so Nana has done very well. But Charley, they add a little interest. This amount the people of koraaa break their affairs inside before the man goes to receive the morning. The only one that we will reach and become like twenty-five thousand.
DK Poison has reportedly told the media that he has been chasing the amount for years and is therefore grateful for the loan repayment despite not receiving interest.
