Dr. Senanu Kwasi Dzokoto, Volta Regional Deputy Director of Health in charge of public health, has urged citizens to pay equal attention to other emerging health problems and respond to measures to reduce them.
He said that other emerging health problems represent a great danger to people’s lives, so “the necessary mechanisms must be put in place to address them, just as efforts are being made to combat the new coronavirus.”
“Just to reiterate the fact, as we focus on COVID-19, let’s not forget about all the other emerging issues we face as a country,” he said.
Dr Dzokoto, who spoke at the launch of the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) and MasterCard Foundation support for the containment of COVID-19 in Ho, said the country “is facing a resurgence of the poliomyelitis”.
He said that since last year, the country had started to register some cases of polio, and this requires a rapid national response to face it and avoid its devastating effects in the country.
The Deputy Director said that to effectively address the rebirth of polio disease in the country, “all children under the age of five will be immunized in eight regions: Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Western, Western North, Upper West , Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta ”between September 10-14, 2020.
He said that the second round of the exercise will take place between October 8 and 11, 2020, with the aim of having a resilient and healthy society against polio that threatens to resurface in the country.
Dr. Dzokoto urged citizens not to allow the COVID-19 pandemic to disrupt their daily lives, but to strive to participate in productive activities to improve their self-esteem and improve their livelihoods.
