Paul Scholes says it is a year too early for Chelsea to fight for the Premier League title.
Frank Lampard’s side fell for their second consecutive loss in the Premier League with a 2-1 stoppage loss to Wolves thanks to a late goal from Pedro Neto.
Chelsea have shown signs of improvement since last season after strengthening their team considerably in the summer.
And the title race promises to be one of the closest and most exciting in years, with just five points separating the top ten so far.
But the former Manchester United player feels Liverpool and Manchester City will still be out of reach for Chelsea.
He said: ‘I think there is a bit of a lack of creativity on the field. (N’Golo) Kante does what he does brilliantly well and has two young players by his side in Mason Mount and Kai Havertz.
“Who I think will be great players, but that’s why I don’t think they will win the league this year. It’s a bit early for them, they will be there, close to Manchester City and Liverpool. I don’t think they’re that ready.
“But in a year with a little experience, a little more quality technical knowledge, they will be there challenging.”
Chelsea would have tied Tottenham and Liverpool on points at the top of the table had they held on after Olivier Giroud’s first goal.
But goals from Daniel Podence and Neto mean they remain in fifth place and if Tottenham or Liverpool win in their clash on Wednesday, that would mean Chelsea would be six points off the top of the table.
Scholes added that it will take time for Chelsea’s young stars to reach their potential, but he has high hopes, especially for Mason Mount.
He said: ‘I think Frank is doing a brilliant job with the team, he has an identity that everyone knows, how they play and what is expected of them.
‘I think the problem he has is creativity looking at the last two games, Everton just created an opportunity.
“I think they have the players, they are young players and they will take time. Mason Mount could be a Frank Lampard, he has the ability to win games for Chelsea. In the next few years he will score many goals like Frank ”.
