Paul Pogba heads to Manchester United’s exit after heart-to-heart talks with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Juventus, the club Pogba left to join United in 2016, is shaping up to be a likely destination for the World Cup winner when the transfer window opens next month, amid growing uncertainty about his future in Old Trafford.
Pogba was left out of the starting eleven that was knocked out of the Champions League by a 3-2 loss at RB Leipzig on Tuesday night, and the player and coach are understood to have spoken constructively about the decision to put to the midfielder on the bench for what was United’s biggest game of the season.
The France international has a professional relationship with Solskjaer and the conversation is said to have been honest and direct.
Solskjaer’s team selection did not have the desired effect as United fell to a 3-0 deficit in 70 minutes.
But Pogba, who came in in the 61st minute, played a big part in United’s failed comeback, playing a key role in his team winning a penalty that Bruno Fernandes converted before scoring the team’s second to set up a frenzied finish.
The World Cup winner’s impact on the game has raised unavoidable questions about Solsjkaer’s decision to start Pogba as a substitute.
Pogba remains committed to United and has a professional relationship with Solskjaer.
But controversial comments from his agent Mino Raiola on Monday, insisting that the 27-year-old must leave Old Trafford, are a strong indicator that the player himself would be willing to leave.
Juventus are interested in bringing Pogba back to Turin, but United’s valuation of the player will be the key to making a deal possible, particularly in light of the financial impact caused by the Covid pandemic.
United effectively has two transfer windows to prevent Pogba from leaving for nothing when his contract expires in 2022, which means a January departure is not ruled out.
But United are eager to recoup most of the £ 89 million they spent to re-sign Pogba, particularly given his commercial value to the club.
However, with his contract running out, the prospect of losing Pogba for nothing a second time is a scenario the club will seek to avoid.
