Patrice Evra has criticized Liverpool fans for lack of “class and respect” when the former Manchester United player shared a letter from the Merseyside club apologizing for the Luis Suarez incident in 2011.
The Uruguayan forward was banned for eight matches and fined £ 40,000 for using the word ‘black’ towards Evra during a Premier League match between Liverpool and United at Anfield in 2011.
But immediately after Evra made the accusations against Suárez, Liverpool defended their player and even wore jerseys in support of the forward before a league game against Wigan in 2012.
When Suarez returned from suspension later in the season, he turned down Evra’s offer to shake hands with the Manchester United captain in the second leg at Old Trafford in 2012.
Along with an image of a 2019 apology letter from Liverpool CEO Peter Moore, Evra attacked Liverpool fans who insulted him in the years following the incident.
Evra captioned the letter before the Premier League tie between Manchester United and Liverpool on Sunday: “I wish Liverpool fans had the same respect and class as you, Peter Moore.”
It is the first time that Evra shares Liverpool’s letter, in which he speaks of a ‘collective regret’ for supporting Suárez after the Football Association banned him for racist abuse.
The French defender had opened up about the Suarez incident during a Monday Night Football episode of Sky Sports in October 2019 and Moore felt compelled to write to Evra after hearing about her ordeal.
The letter said: ‘The reason for my correspondence is simple and necessary, we owe you an apology. It was negligent on our part not to apologize much earlier and that is a mistake for which we must take responsibility.
As a club, we failed to meet our high standards of inclusion, equality and fairness when faced with your serious but fully justified allegations eight years ago. It is a matter of collective regret.
‘I hope subsequent events have shown that we did learn lessons from the period in question. Although those lessons were painful, they were also absolutely necessary and I want to assure you that we will continue to pay attention to them in the future. ‘
Evra revealed in January 2020 that Moore and Liverpool had sent him an apology for the entire scandal following his 2019 appearance on Monday Night Football.
Additionally, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and current club captain Jordan Henderson, who were playing for the Merseyside club at the time, revealed that the Reds made a mistake in publicly supporting Suarez and apologized to him.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Evra said: ‘I was pleased that Jamie Carragher was apologizing. I received a personalized letter from Peter Moore and I was very touched.
‘(He sent the letter) three days after the show. I was like, “Thank you very much, this really touches my heart.”
“But I was very disappointed for so long that a great club like Liverpool supported a cause like that.”
The FA imposed a three-game suspension on current Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani after he used the same racial term on social media towards a friend, despite the Uruguayan’s insistence that it was a friendly term.
Suárez joined the Uruguayan federation in condemning the English for handing over the ban to Cavani, which they described as a ‘discriminatory act’.
Liverpool host Manchester United on Sunday in a clash at the top of the table, with the latter three points behind Premier League champions Jurgen Klopp.
