The leading minority deputy in Parliament, James Klutse Avedzi, has condemned an assault on the legislature of the Odododiodio constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye.
According to the Ketu North MP, such behavior should not be entertained by the general public or in politics.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye, who is also a former Sports Minister, was physically assaulted by 12 suspected Homeland Security operatives outside the James Town Police Station on Monday night.
The recent attack has resurrected previous debates about adequate security for MPs outside the House.
Last year, the leadership of Parliament made a strong case for the state to take steps to provide security for Members of Parliament (MPs) to protect them against attacks by unprotected members of society.
In arguing the case, the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, said that by the nature of the work of parliamentarians in terms of their investigative and inquisitorial functions, they provoked the ire of some members of society who would want to harm MPs .
But with less than 100 days to go until the December 7 elections, and the numerous violence that erupted in the compilation of a new voter registry for the polls, tensions have been high as many fear that on December 7 the polls will not be peaceful.
But speaking to a section of the press in Parliament, James Avedzi described the perpetrators’ action as evil and unacceptable.
According to him, although the minority has not yet taken action against the attack, the police administration can accelerate its investigations to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime are brought to account.
“Why should a member of Parliament be assaulted? What is your crime? If you are attacked in your constituency and people get to know the perpetrators and retaliate, then there will be fights here and there.
“It is not appropriate to attack a member of Parliament and, in fact, it is not appropriate to attack anyone because Ghana is a peaceful place.
“That is why we are urging the police to quickly arrest people and find out why they should attack the MP.
“Currently, we are awaiting the full report from the MP, then we will take the appropriate measures. Once this is done we will know what action to take and one of them will be to write to the Spokesperson about security, ”he said.
Adding his voice, Kumbungu constituency deputy Ras Mubarak also condemned the incident.
Citing as an example the attack on the MP by Ningo Prampram, Sam George, the MP expressed his disappointment with the police for the lack of seriousness associated with the crimes perpetrated against members of the opposition NDC and the delay in arresting the culprits.
