The Champions League match between Paris St. Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir was abandoned on Tuesday night after both teams left the field in protest of allegations that the fourth official had racially abused an assistant coach.

In unprecedented scenes in the Parc des Princes, players left the field amid claims that Romania’s Sebastian Coltescu had used a racial slur against Basaksehir’s assistant coach, Pierre Achille Webo.

Despite Uefa announcing that the match would resume with a new fourth official, Basaksehir refused to take the field again amid concerns Coltescu would be replaced by a video assistant referee whose role he would later play himself.

Webo was sent off in the 16th minute of the Group H clash, prompting a furious reaction from the Basaksehir players, who accused Coltescu of insulting former Cameroonian forward Webo prior to his dismissal.

Basaksehir manager Okan Buruk was heard telling the fourth official: “You are racist”, while substitute Demba Ba, a former forward for Chelsea, West Ham United and Newcastle United, demanded that Coltescu explain himself: “Why? When you mention a black man, do you have to say this black man? “
