Mesut Ozil’s agent criticized Mikel Arteta for lack of loyalty and respect, claiming that the Arsenal manager lied about why the midfielder was left out of the club’s Premier League squad.
Ozil, who hasn’t played since March, was also banned from the club’s Europa League squad, meaning he won’t be able to appear until at least January.
Arteta claimed that the decision was solely for soccer reasons, but, in an interview with ESPN, Ozil’s agent, Erkut Sogut, says that the coach has treated the midfielder unfairly and has not been honest about his decision to leave it out.
He said: ‘Arsenal fans deserve an honest explanation, no [Arteta] saying ‘I failed Ozil’. You didn’t fail Ozil – you failed to be fair, honest, and transparent and to treat someone who had a contract and was loyal all the time with respect.
‘All the outsiders know they haven’t treated him fairly. It did not give him a chance to show himself this season. If he is still under contract, the player should have the option to stay and fight for his place. Mesut has not been given that. Why would you put a player on the bench twice for 90 minutes? [against Brighton and Crystal Palace in June] if he was not fit or committed?
Everyone says they are training well. Per Mertesacker said this publicly. I spoke to at least five teammates who say he is training very well. They say Mesut is one of their best players and they cannot understand why he is left out. So it can’t be the training; if not the field, what are the football reasons? If you do speak, you should speak the truth that Arsenal fans deserve, otherwise don’t speak at all. ‘
Arteta insisted that the midfielder had opportunities after his decision to leave him out of the teams. He said: ‘When I think I could contribute to making the team better, that’s why they hired me in this football club to become the coach to win football matches, competition and create and build a short, medium and long project ‘term – has had opportunities like everyone else’.
But Sogut contrasted Arteta’s treatment of Ozil with the way Arsene Wenger cared for him during his time at the Emirates, noting how the Spaniard did not start a single Premier League match in his final season.
‘He [Arteta] he started zero Premier League games in his final season, ”said Sogut.
“ He wasn’t there in the last six months, busy making his coach badges and meeting coaches for his future. Mesut plays for an English team and that’s all because he feels like he can only play for that team. He’s a gunner in the end.
‘Mesut is not a player who yesterday is Toffee and today Gunner. Arteta didn’t play at all in the last two years, but they still signed him up because they gave him a contract. Arsene Wenger put him on the field for the final two minutes of his final game just to give him a good time, even though he was out of shape for months. Look how [Arteta] was treated in his last two years, and how Mesut is being treated in his last year. ‘
Ozil issued a statement after his omission from the Premier League team in which he harshly criticized the club for its lack of loyalty, but stopped short of pointing the finger at his coach.
As Sportsmail exclusively revealed on Wednesday, the former German international believes Arsenal’s business interests in China played a role in the decision to exclude him from both teams.
Last December, the midfielder condemned China’s alleged mistreatment of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang province in a post on Instagram. Despite being quickly overruled by Arsenal, the position still had damaging business consequences for the club.
Ozil’s comments were condemned by the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese FA and he was removed from a computer game in China for his actions, while Arsenal’s next match with Manchester City was removed on state television.
The club has a significant business presence in China and owns a restaurant chain and has an official lottery partner and vehicle supplier.
Ozil was also criticized for refusing to take a 12.5% pay cut in April, despite being the club’s top earner at £ 350,000. The midfielder is said to have refused due to a lack of clarity on how the money would be spent.
But Sogut defended Ozil saying: ‘You have to understand the big picture. the [Uighur situation] created problems for the entire Premier League, not just Arsenal. I was hoping to get more support from the club. It’s not about politics, it’s about human rights, putting people in detention centers. Imagine a soccer player comes out and says ‘this is inhuman.’ Is that politics or empathy?
Arsenal was criticized by fans and former players for causing 55 staff members, including scouts and their mascot Gunnersaurus, to be fired due to financial pressures from the coronavirus. Ozil has offered to cover the salary of Jerry Quy, the Gunnersaurus mascot man, while he remains at the club.
Sogut entered the club for lack of class and saw the club spending on transfers right after they made the decision to lay off the staff.
“A classy club would not be expected to lay off 55 people right after winning the FA Cup or lay off a mascot after 27 years of service, just before making a 45 million pound signing,” he said.
And it doesn’t help if people outside the club speak on your behalf. Unfortunately, it gives a very bad image of the club that we are not used to having in a team like Arsenal ”.
Former Arsenal players have also supported Ozil. Jack Wilshere defended his former teammate on Twitter this week, insisting that he remains the club’s “best player”, while Cesc Fabregas named him one of the top five players of the club’s recent past.
Ozil praised his former coach Arsene Wenger for “always being respectful, fair and honest” 24 hours after criticizing the club for its lack of loyalty.
Wishing the 71-year-old man a happy birthday on Twitter, Ozil wrote: ‘Happy birthday, boss! Thank you for all the trust and support you have given me from my first day to your last day @ArsenalFC.
“Without a doubt one of the best coaches in the history of the Premier League, always respectful, fair and honest. We wish you all the best! # M1Ö ‘
