Mesut Ozil greeted by the Gunnersaurus mascot before the Champions League tie against Paris St-Germain in 2016
Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has offered to pay the salary of Jerry Quy, the man who plays the role of the Gunnersaurus club mascot.
On Monday, the Gunners announced that Quy, who has been part of the day’s experience at Arsenal for 27 years, was one of 55 layoffs.
“I was so sad that Jerry Quy, aka our famous and loyal mascot Gunnersaurus and an integral part of our club, was fired after 27 years,” the 31-year-old German said in a post on Twitter.
“As such, I offer to reimburse Arsenal with the full salary of our big green man as long as he is an Arsenal player so that Jerry can continue his work that he loves so much.”
Arsenal said it had to lay off staff due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Gunners first-team players and head coach Mikel Arteta agreed to a 12.5% pay cut in April. The club’s executive team also agreed to give up more than a third of their salaries over the next 12 months.

Arsenal signed midfielder Thomas Partey for £ 45m from Atlético de Madrid on Monday’s transfer deadline.
Former German international Ozil has been with the Gunners since 2013, and his contract expires at the end of the season. He is paid £ 350,000 per week, although he has not played so far in 2020-21.
As a result of the pandemic, no fans have been able to attend a Premier League match since March.
