-Ghana’s mass COVID-19 vaccination started on Tuesday, March 2, 2021
-More than 400,000 people have been vaccinated so far.
-Of that number, about 1,050 had side effects.
The program director of the Expanded Program on Immunization at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Kwame Amponsah-Achiano, says that some 1,050 Ghanaians developed side effects after taking the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
More than 400,000 Ghanaians were vaccinated as of March 16, 2021, said Dr. Amponsah-Achiano.
“So we’ve had almost 1,030 and 1,050 events supporting, again, these are risks… compared to the number of people vaccinated and it’s roughly 268-300 events per 100,000 people vaccinated. In other words, for every 100,000 people who have received the vaccine, we have received 300 reports, ”he told Accra-based 3FM on Friday, March 19.
Ghana received 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine on February 22, 2021, within the framework of the United Nations-led COVAX facility.
The AstraZeneca vaccine is licensed by the Serum Institute of India (AZ / SII).
13 more deaths from COVID-19 recorded in 24 hours; death toll now 698
Ghana is expected to receive an additional two million of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines from the COVAX facility by the end of May this year, boasting the government’s quest to vaccinate some 20 million Ghanaians.
Meanwhile, a Ghanaian franc described the deployment of free vaccines in the country as worrying.
Kennedy Agyapong, a ruling member of parliament for Assin Central’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), said he was willing to fund Ghana’s purchase of the vaccine to reduce the country’s over-reliance on aid.
“I’m not bragging, but I’m willing to give Akufo-Addo a million dollars to get the shots,” he said on his Net 2 television Wednesday.
“I don’t like the idea of always going to developed countries to ask for support as if we couldn’t do anything for ourselves,” he added.
