For many, Mauricio Pochettino’s pending appointment as Paris Saint-Germain manager means Dele Alli’s scheduled departure from Tottenham is almost complete.
Seemingly an outcast under José Mourinho, Alli would run into the arms of his former mentor in France to revive his career.
Last week’s public reprimand from an angry Mourinho only raised expectations that when the January transfer window opens on Saturday, Alli will not be seen by the proverbial dust.
There he has not been comfortable with Mourinho. But the truth is that he has been out of shape for 18 months, left on the bench and out of the squad.
However, PSG received little attention in the summer and despite how it looks, Tottenham’s message remains that there is little appetite for losing the 24-year-old despite wanting to leave.
There have been no difficult conversations about a January move and they want Alli to stay and fight for her place, citing Tanguy Ndombele’s rebirth as an example to follow. Mourinho is not averse to changing his system should Alli rediscover his touch when injury opportunities arise, such as Giovani Lo Celso’s hamstring rupture.
Mourinho would prefer to join his squad, wanting to cover himself in midfield and central defense. But he will let goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga out and Danny Rose has no way back. Until last week’s driving accident, the 30-year-old had been training well with the U23s. With six months remaining on his contract, he has been biding his time waiting for the right offer.
Alli and Co aren’t the only high-profile players looking for an outlet next week in a market where the emphasis is on sales.
Christian Eriksen will be offered across Europe as Inter Milan seek a quick deal, while Atletico Madrid canceled his contract on Tuesday, while former Chelsea player Diego Costa
Mesut Ozil’s future is surely far from Arsenal. Although some high-level players have lobbied for him to rejoin Mikel Arteta’s team, believing that the victory over Chelsea masks his greater need for creativity, there is a desire to raise funds.
Ozil has interests from MLS, Turkey, Germany and Italy, but cost is the main obstacle. Arsenal, cooling off at the Houssem Aouar in Lyon, have considered Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho, while Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt is fanciful but unlikely to be sold in January.
The need for funds means that other sacrifices can be made, such as the sale of Hector Bellerin. Arsenal also face a decision over forward Folarin Balogun. Still to be agreed on a new contract, he has caught the attention of Liverpool and Bundesliga clubs.
Danny Drinkwater is one of several players Chelsea will be looking to move forward. The 30-year-old’s last appearance with Chelsea was more than two years ago at the Community Shield. Loan spells at Burnley and Aston Villa ended badly and he was reluctant to leave a division in the summer. But all options will be considered now.
Left-back Marcos Alonso is in talks about a signing for Atlético, while Fikayo Tomori is a loan option for Newcastle. Chelsea will also hear offers for Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Jorginho.
Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero was barred from a transfer to Everton in the summer and has seen negotiations over a Valencia signing fail. His compatriot Marcos Rojo may have better luck leaving. Sheffield United tried to attract him in August and will try again, but will face competition from Newcastle.
Liverpool has often turned to Divock Origi in times of need, but is now ready to accept offers of around £ 20 million for the Belgian. The wolves, who have asked about Luka Jovic from Real Madrid among others, would like Origi, although preferably on loan.
Everton’s Jonjoe Kenny was considered one of the best full-backs in the Bundesliga while on loan at Schalke last season. However, Carlo Ancelotti has used others as makeshift right backs in place of 23-year-old Kenny, and a move appears to be the best option.
His forgotten teammate Yannick Bolasie, a £ 25m signing from Crystal Palace four years ago, is looking for a fresh start with Middlesbrough discussing a loan.
Palace is keen to fire defender James Tomkins, while midfielder James McCarthy has no contract for the summer.
