The head of programs for the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition says the Office of the Special Prosecutor may no longer appear attractive to anti-corruption activists.
Bright Sowu said this is due to the circumstances surrounding Martin Amidu’s resignation from the job.
According to him, anyone nominated for the position would be concerned about the independence of their position and the amount of seriousness that the government will give to their reports.
His comments follow the resignation of Martin Amidu, who cited political interference in his work as one of the reasons he had to leave office.
In Amidu’s letter to the press, he stated: “The reaction I received for daring to produce Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions’ anti-corruption report convinces me beyond any reasonable doubt that I did not intend to exercise any independence as a Special Prosecutor in the prevention, investigation, prosecution and recovery of corruption assets. Consequently, my position as Special Prosecutor has clearly become untenable. “
According to Bright Sowu, the alleged lack of independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor would be the main reason why other anti-corruption activists might want to avoid the office entirely.
He said, “It’s something that anyone else who moves into that office and has that genuine heart to really do the job and do it on behalf of the people of Ghana, not for a particular president, not for a particular government, will take a Look closely and say well for the type of job I need to report on for the president to act or the executive to act, am I confident that they will actually act on those particular reports and bring the case to a further conclusion logic? “
He added that, “For example, people who come to that office will say do I have the support to make this office work? Will I be successful in this endeavor? “
