The forward and Brazilian were on hand to help the Porcupine Warriors to three points on Monday
Asante Kotoko recorded her biggest win of the season with a 2-0 win over Liberty Professionals in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) on Monday.
Kwame Opoku’s double in the first half sealed three points for the hosts in matchday eight at Accra Sports Stadium.
The result has catapulted the Porcupine Warriors to sixth place in the league table, tied on points with their arch-rivals Hearts of Oak, who rank higher due to better goal difference.
Freedom, for its part, occupies the eleventh position.
The main topic of conversation of the Kotoko team news was the presence of new Brazilian signing Fabio Gama Dos Santos for his first start at his new club.
Joining the former Brazil U-17 and U-21 forward in coach Johnson Smith’s starting lineup were Mubarik Yusif, Samuel Frimpong and Emmanuel Sarkodie, with Habib Mohammed and Emmanuel Gyamfi among the casualties.
Kotoko did her best from the start when Opoku set Christopher Nettey up for a first goal chance in the second minute, but the defender’s final effort was deflected.
In the 10th minute, the Porcupine Warriors broke the deadlock when Opoku grabbed onto a Gama ball inside the box, creating space for him before shooting into the net to make it 1-0.
Opoku and the Brazilian combined once again for their team’s second goal in the 10th minute, the latter putting the former on goal. Then, Opoku calmly got into the net to double the score. It was his fifth goal in six appearances so far this season, having also recorded an assist.
Four minutes later, the forward nearly scored a triplet after connecting with Samuel Frimpong’s shot into the penalty area, but Liberty Professionals goalkeeper Kofi Baah was alert to keep the ball out of the net this time.
At the other end, in the 31st minute, Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Razak Abalora, was on hand to block a shot from inside the box to keep the score unchanged.
After recess, Liberty again put Abalora to the test in the 59th minute, but the goalkeeper again proved his ability.
In the 72nd minute, Gama was about to register his own goal, but goalkeeper Baah managed a save to deny the Brazilian who played a clean exchange with Opoku.
That was to be the last great chance of the match, as the referee whistled to end the match after three minutes of injury time.
