The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed the wife of the late Ekow Hayford as its 2020 parliamentary candidate for the Mfansteman constituency.
Mrs. Ophelia Hayford replaces her late husband, who was killed by unknown assailants on Friday, October 9, while returning from a campaign tour.
This decision was made by the party’s National Executive Committee (CNE) in a meeting held on Sunday, October 18, in accordance with article 12 of the PNP Constitution.
According to the NEC, the party consulted widely with all stakeholders, including Mfantseman’s voters, before Ms Ophelia Hayford was selected as a parliamentary candidate.
“Mrs. Hayford had been a strong pillar in your late husband’s political life and certainly her selection as his replacement can only be a step in the right direction,” read a press release signed by the PNP secretary general, John Boadu.
He added that the party officially notified the Electoral Commission and requested a 10-day extension of the nomination period in accordance with Section 13 (4) of IC 127.
“Within this period, the party will present Ms Ophelia Hayford as its parliamentary candidate for the constituency.”
The NEC also urged the party’s National Steering Committee to find a replacement for Yapei-Kusawgu’s parliamentary candidate, Mr. Abu Kamara.
Mr. Kamara and two others lost their lives on Friday, October 16, in a fatal car accident.
