One person has been confirmed dead in attacks by secessionists in western Togo on Friday 25 September 2020.

The deceased was a member of the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) that participated in an exchange of fire with the joint security team that had been deployed to restore calm to the region.

The secessionists, who had previously carried out a simultaneous attack on the Aveyime and Mepe police stations in the North Tongu district of the Volta region, say they want the region to be an autonomous country known as Western Togoland.

The police and the military command have released a joint statement detailing what was secured in the run-up to the assassination during which 31 other people were arrested.

“The shootings between the Group and the Security Agencies led to the death of one (1) member of the HSGF and the wounding of three (3) others,” the press release of September 25 revealed.

According to the statement, an Aveyime police commander who was also injured was evacuated to the Police Hospital, while the other injured members of the HSGF were also evacuated to the Ho University Hospital.

The security team also indicated that the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) had drawn up an elaborate plan to destroy some key facilities in the region, including the Ho Central Market. But the plan was unsuccessful due to efforts by Thursday’s security operation.

“It is hereby declared that an earlier preventive operation on Thursday, September 24, 2020 foiled a Group plan to burn down the Central Ho Market and other key facilities.”

The secessionists had previously set up barricades on all roads leading to and from the Volta region, which led to about 3 km of traffic.

The two security agencies “have also cleared all the blockades and the security agencies have taken control of the roads and strategic facilities within the Region.”
