Karaga district police arrested an Alhassan Abukari after a clash between supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Congress in Sung, Karaga district in the northern region.

According to a report in the Daily Graphic, Alhassan was arrested at the Karaga police station premises after chasing another person to the police station during the confrontation.

The suspect is said to have had a locally made pistol recovered from him when he was arrested.

On Tuesday, November 10, 2020, chaos broke out among supporters of the two political parties in Sung when the NDC was holding a demonstration in the city.

The situation turned into a wave of stabbings that resulted in six people suffering varying degrees of machete blows.

Adomonline.com reports that the Regional Crimes Officer, Superintendent Baaba Ananga, has indicated that the situation has been brought under control with investigations into the matter already underway.

While ensuring that the perpetrators of the act will be prosecuted, Superintendent Ananga hinted that the police in the area are on alert and are working to prevent any form of retaliation.

“For now, those who were injured have been discharged as we have patrol teams in the town to prevent any attack, as we are vigilant for retaliatory attacks. At the end of the day, patrol teams will receive more support from Yendi, ”Adomonline.com quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile, the two candidates from opposing parties in the area find themselves locked in a blame game, which caused the confrontation.

The PNP Member of Parliament for the area, Alhassan Sualihu Dandawaa, alleged on Monday that his supporters were attacked without any police intervention.

In reaction to the allegations, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, who is the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Karaga, said that his contender, who is also the incumbent MP, is to blame for the clashes.
