Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will begin a major cleanup this week by speaking to six of his fringe players about a loan or permanent move out of the club, according to reports.
Solskjaer rarely uses multiple members of his 35-man squad and is keen to create room for more signings at the end of this season.
That will lead to showdown talks this week with players like goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who The Sun has reported that he wants to correct the mistake he felt when a deadline was missed last summer.
Injury-stricken defender Phil Jones is a target for struggling West Brom and Newcastle are reportedly looking for Marcos Rojo as he did not show up for the club during the current campaign.
Jesse Lingard, who was not in favor of the favorites, had his contract extended for a year earlier this week in a move that was almost certainly made in order to ensure that United receives a fee for his services.
Former England midfielder Lingard has been restricted to Carabao Cup outings for joint Premier League leaders this season and has been linked to a surprise move to Tottenham that could reunite him with former United manager José Mourinho.
Winger Daniel James scored as he completed his first 90 minutes of the season in last month’s thrilling 6-2 win over Leeds, but he has still been a peripheral figure for much of the season and could be ready for a loan move to continue its development.
Despite being frequently deployed by Solskjaer last season, 20-year-old left-back Brandon Williams has barely appeared since the start of the 2020/21 campaign and has been linked to Southampton, Newcastle and the Bundesliga’s Bayer Leverkusen.
The prospect described the next year as a ‘mystery’ on Instagram and is also ready to chat with Solskjaer about a possible move.
Solskjaer confirmed after United’s Premier League victory over Aston Villa on Friday that Atalanta winger Amad Diallo will join the first team in January.
He added: ‘We are always working long term, that’s the most important thing. We have goals that we need, in the long term, for the club. ‘
