Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer criticized his team’s complacency after being defeated by new Champions League players Istanbul Basakesehir.
United were the big favorites heading into the game after beating last year’s finalist Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig 5-0 at Old Trafford last week.
But poor defense saw Solskjaer’s team slide into an unlikely defeat and the coach was not impressed with his team’s performance.
“The performance was not good enough,” Solskjaer said.
“Against a team that worked and ran and well, they beat us at halftime a couple of times and scored a couple of goals like you do sometimes in Europe when you don’t defend well enough.
“ We played a short corner kick and we forgot about the man upstairs and that is inexcusable and of course the second also we are not very well organized to counter pressure and get the ball back when we play.
‘Two soft goals to give away and then we didn’t have enough to come back in the second half. We had 45 minutes to save something from the game, we threw everything away, but we couldn’t break them. ”
“It has set us back a lot (the losses to Arsenal and Basaksehir), you have a reality check every time you play football here.
“Nothing goes down in history faster than a soccer game. You don’t just show up and get three points in the Champions League shown here today.
“We’ve played a lot of good people on good teams and we weren’t good enough, that’s all.
“It’s not easy to be positive now, of course it isn’t when you just lost like you did, but these players are good players and we have a chance on Saturday morning to get going again.”
Basaksehir took the lead in the 12th minute as United fumbled from their own corner. The ball was cleared for Demba Ba, who was left alone at the midfield line, and the forward was able to run towards the goal to finish off Dean Henderson.
Edin Visca made it 2-0 in the 40th minute before Anthony Martial scored a goal just before half-time.
But United managed just one more shot on goal in the second half as they struggled to take down a stubborn Basaksehir side.
Solskjaer will now side with him at Goodison Park to face Everton, who are looking to get back on the winning track after losses to Southampton and Newcastle.
