Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United will have learned from their semi-final curse to win their first trophy since 2017.

United will face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-finals at Old Trafford on Wednesday after being sent off from the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup in the same phase last season.

“We are happy to be in a semi-final and of course a semi-final is an opportunity to reach the final,” said Solskjaer, whose team leads the Premier League after beating Aston Villa 2-1 on Friday.

‘Last year we just weren’t able to get through. I think we’ve improved since then and we’re going to try.

“As for the position in the league, it’s a very, very long season and I still think we have a lot to learn. Let’s see March, April where we are then.

The only surprise for City boss Pep Guardiola is that it has taken United so long to become a true contender again.

“Since I arrived, I expected United to be there all the time. Sometimes it has not always been possible, especially in the Premier League, but if they are there it is because they deserve it.

I’m pretty sure Ole is happier than me. I’m not very concerned about United. I’m so busy with what we have to do every day with the players that we have ”.

City have won the last three League Cups and will equal Liverpool’s all-time record with a fourth win. “We never let any competition fall,” Guardiola added.

His team would also be a challenge at the top of the league if he wins both his games in hand. But the City manager, who faces Chelsea today, warns:

‘The best advice I can give is to just focus on the next one. If you think about what happens in January and February and the two games we have in hand, we can lose them. ‘
