Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ruled out any possibility of Sergio Aguero being at Old Trafford next season due to his long association with Manchester City.
Aguero is poised to be the hottest free signing of the summer following confirmation that he is leaving City, where he is the club’s record scorer.
Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona have already linked up with the Argentine forward, but Manchester United will not join the chase with Solskjaer against anyone moving around town, and Aguero would surely be reluctant as well.
“I would not expect any player who has played for a club for 10 years to want to go to their local rivals,” insists the United manager.
‘It’s not for me. I know we are professionals, but when you play for Man United you don’t go to Man City. We have had examples of that and I really disagree with that. I won’t name names, but everyone knows who I mean. Enough talk.
“ When I was playing for Man United, if a rival club tried to sign me and I had gone, well, where is the loyalty? Loyalty is one of the values that I really put up with. ”
The last high-profile player to move between the two Manchester clubs was Carlos Tevez in 2009, sparking friction when City launched a poster campaign with the slogan “Welcome to Manchester”; Owen Hargreaves also joined City from United in 2011.
Ahead of a great week in the Europa League, Manchester United will try to consolidate their position in the top four of the Premier League at home to Brighton.
Marcus Rashford hopes to return for the 300th game of his career, as he missed out on England in the international break with a foot injury.
The forward has also suffered from shoulder problems this season, but Solskjaer has no long-term fears about the 23-year-old’s well-being despite the heavy workload for the club and the country.
“I have no concerns about Marcus’ general fitness,” he said. ‘I was impressed by its strength and robustness. He has a character where even if he feels something, he doesn’t want to miss out on the games.
‘Every footballer has a little here, a little there. Very rarely do you say that you are 100% fit. You could be 95 percent fit for 99 percent.
“This is how it is when you are a professional footballer, especially now with a game every three or four days. There was never a risk that we thought would harm him. ‘
United are on the hunt for three signings, including a winger and a center forward in the next transfer window, but Solskjaer is willing to wait until the last day to achieve his maximum goals, as they did early last year with Bruno Fernandes. . .
“All the coaches in the world would like to have the players available as soon as possible and bring their training and plans together, but this is not how the world works all the time,” said the United manager.
‘If you have a goal, it could mean that you have to wait until the last day, like Bruno, for example. We knew he was the one and that worked out well. Players can adapt quickly if they are the right ones.
“I am not the one in the trenches with the negotiations, so I leave it to the club and so far I think we have done a very good job. We have the goals we really wanted and have been building.
“There is always an opportunity, although this window will be different from any other due to the pandemic and the money that teams have lost.”
