Former Deputy Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye has praised Ghanaians for the level of interest shown in the ongoing mass Covid-19 vaccination exercise.

According to him, the massive patronage of Ghanaians can be attributed to the public broadcast of the vaccination by the president and other government officials.

Speaking in an interview on Joy News’ the Pulse, Oko Boye revealed that, an investigation was conducted on the acceptance of the Covid-19 vaccine in Accra and the result showed that only 37 percent of Ghanaians were willing to get vaccinated.

“Two-thirds, or 63 percent of Ghanaians, were not ready to get vaccinated in Accra, so can you imagine what can happen in rural areas? I ask.

“By the grace of God, immediately the president, vice president and key officials took the vaccine, that particular attitude and posture began to change,” he added.

Boye said the president and other key officials who took the vaccine have assured Ghanaians to do the same, adding that the move would encourage the government to purchase many vaccines.

“As we speak, between this month and May, we expect 2 to 3 million more vaccines from COVAX, Syndex has given us a few thousand as a gift from the Russian Confederation. The Indian government has given us about 50,000, COVAX brings 2 million.

“Health Minister Kweku Agyemang Manu is also working with the Russian government to bring in a few million. We are seeing around 10 million vaccines against Spunnik V, ”he commented.

The former minister said that although some reactions such as headaches, body aches, chills and mild fevers are associated with inoculation, it is best for Ghanaians to get vaccinated to protect themselves from contracting the virus.

“There is a greater benefit which is that you are protected from serious diseases, it means that your condition will be mild to moderate. It will not end up in the ICU and Ga East or the University of Ghana Medical Center and the protection against death is almost 100 percent for the entire vaccine.

“If you get the chance, don’t hesitate at all. Don’t say I’m hoping that 95 or 80 percent, whatever is approved by the Ghana FDA for use, will save you from serious illness and that is why I encourage people to get vaccinated, ”he emphasized.
