Commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as “Okada Motorcyclists,” have promised to offer free rides to voters across the country on Election Day in support of John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to legalize and regulate their activities.
National spokesman for a commercial motorcyclists association, Solomon Akpanaba, revealed that all members across the country have been asked to abide by a directive to provide free bike rides.
According to a report by XYZonline, Akpanada told Power FM in an interview that free rides are the association’s way of ensuring that John Mahama’s commitment is honored.
John Mahama promised that his government will legalize commercial motorcycle operation when he comes to power in 2021.
According to him, the Okada business has become a livelihood for unemployed youth.
Addressing people during his tour of Kpando in the Volta Region, he stated that “our law says that okada is illegal, but it is a reality that is here to stay and cannot be stopped. So, I say that when we take office, we will legalize it but we will regulate it. “
The former president’s guarantee has generated a lot of excitement among the thousands of Okada cyclists in Ghana and a large number of them have publicly declared that they will vote for the NDC in the general election on December 7.
But speaking at the joint launch of a strategic Volkswagon & Blackivy collaboration to launch the new Volkswagon assembled cars in Ghana, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government will stick with its decision to provide a Best alternative for the Riders of Okada.
“I know there has been a recent discussion about Okada in Ghana, I think in the context of what we are doing rather we will encourage Okada passengers to come and try to lease these vehicles so that they can run business. They need to move from this risky and less safe okada to a safer mode of transportation. Your problem will be the lack of capital, but if you incorporate new leasing policies and we have our national ID cards with our digital addresses, we can have a working credit system and give you a different option to this risky job. “
He added: “You don’t want to finish driving school and then make a living riding okada. You may have a better option and we will give you a better option. So, yeah, we won’t legalize Okada’s business. It may be a difficult decision, but it is in the interest of Ghanaians. We have had discussions, but we will stand by our decision to provide a better alternative to okada driving. Let’s give them the opportunity to rent vehicles and pay over time. “
