Ghanaian gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy has revealed that social media has been a great source of musical income for her and many other New Age musicians in Ghana and the world at large.

A statement that stands in direct contrast to some opinions given by ‘veteran’ musicians who believe that the influx of these new social media platforms and online marketing strategies has done them more harm than good.

Speaking in an interview with Hammer Nti, Ohemaa Mercy explained that conventional album sales methods generate little or no income, compared to what sales do on social media. He also said that social media has not only served as a revenue maximizing agent, it has also broadened the reach of its audience and put its music on platforms where it normally would not have gone if it had stayed with conventional sales and marketing methods.

Ohemaa noted that releasing albums as a means of accumulating earnings is a bad idea, compared to releasing singles that generate three times the funds. She reiterated, “By releasing individual music, you help us promote and also increase the impact of the music you release.” “Releasing singles allows you to earn more money,” he added.
