Police in Odupong Ofaakor in the central region arrested a self-described spiritualist in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old who worked as an accountant at Power Hydraulics, a division of Unilever.
The suspect, Suleman Mumuni Tanko, 35, was arrested on Cape Coast last Tuesday following the alleged murder of the victim, Anita Walter, at a hotel (name withheld) in Ofaakor near Kasoa.
It is said that the suspect took, after the act, an unspecified amount of money both in dollars and in Cedi belonging to the victim.
Money
Following his arrest, the police recovered $ 5,600 from him, a meter-long exhaust pipe with which he allegedly used to assault Anita until she lost consciousness.
Anita is said to be a recent First Class graduate from a tertiary institution in the country.
The Ofaakor district police commander, DSP Samuel Amfo, who confirmed the story, told the Daily Graphic yesterday that the incident occurred on Thursday, November 5, after Anita had reserved room number three at the hotel.
He said preliminary investigations showed that after reserving the room, Anita told the hotel attendant that she was bringing her boss and later returned with the suspect.
“The lady booked a room at the hotel and said she was going to meet with her boss to talk and soon after she returned with the then supposed boss.
“Some time later, the suspect left the hotel room alone and went to his car with registration number CR 136-20, to pick up a metal (broken one meter exhaust pipe) and returned to the room, apparently to use with Anita, “he said.
After the act
DSP Amfo added that after the act, the suspect left the room with the victim’s belongings and walked away, leaving her locked up with her hands and feet tied with cello tape.
As the suspect walked away, the police commander said, he threw away the hotel room key and was picked up by a passerby who called the phone number written on it.
“With the key in his hands, the hotel manager wondered how a stranger could find outside a key that he gave to a hotel occupant. And then he decided to open the door to Anita’s room, ”he said.
DSP Amfo said that when the door was opened, the manager found Anita half naked on the bed with both hands and feet tied with duct tape.
He said the manager was quick to report his findings to police, who also rushed to the scene and took the inert body of the victim, who was suspected of being in a coma, to 37-Military Hospital.
Information gathering
Unfortunately, DSP Amfo said, Anita died about 24 hours later.
The Ofaakor District Police Commander said that through intelligence gathering, the suspect was detained on Cape Coast.
He said the suspect would be brought to court today as police are still investigating the matter.
