OccupyGhana®️ notes that current restrictions imposed on public meetings by the Restrictions Instrument (Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic) 2020 (IE 64) will expire tonight, May 10, 2020.
We have also noted with concern the rate at which COVID-19 cases have increased in Ghana since the partial closure was lifted on April 19, 2020. Positive cases have increased from 1,042 to 4,263 and deaths from 9 to 22 in 21 days. This increase is predominantly of community spread.
There has been little success in enforcing the restrictive measures announced by the President, and they have been largely ignored by the public. The good news is that most of the positive cases are asymptomatic and the case fatality rate has been quite low.
We believe that reducing restrictions at this time and lifting the ban on social gatherings would be very risky. Relaxing the restrictions could accelerate the spread of the community, expose the most vulnerable Ghanaians, increase the number of symptomatic cases and increase the case fatality rate.
That is why OccupyGhana®️ is asking the President not to relax the restrictions, but to continue with the current measures aimed at curbing and ultimately stopping the spread of COVID-19. We will support additional and even improved restrictions, and for as long as it takes to reduce infections.
We also encourage the Ghana Health Service to continue the testing, tracing and treatment campaign. Until a vaccine is available, that’s the best way to manage the outbreak.
Finally, we request that the epidemiological data on the outbreak in Ghana be made publicly available immediately so that everyone can see our progress or not.
Still at the service of God and the country
OccupyGhana®
