With days until Christmas, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to remain cautious and observe all safety protocols in place for the coronavirus to stop the spread of the disease.
Ghana has not seen a major increase in Covid-19 cases since mid-September, when cases topped between 100 and 130 per day.
The country’s total active cases has dropped marginally from 1,139 in November 2020 to 946 as of December 18, 2020 due to rigorous monitoring and testing, as well as the government-adopted treatment regimen.
In a national televised address on Sunday, the president noted that although hospitalization rates had declined, with isolation centers nearly empty, available data indicated that Ghana was experiencing clusters of cases related, in large part, to enclosed spaces with poor ventilation, workplaces, offices, factories, schools, parties and passengers arriving at our airport.
He called on the people of Ghana to respect all security measures during Christmas, avoid large social and religious gatherings, especially family gatherings and holidays, so as not to undermine the progress made in the fight against the pandemic.
“The dynamics of the virus have taught us that if you must organize or attend such events, they are best held safely outdoors or in well-ventilated hallways, rather than indoors with air conditioning.
“Even when organizing outdoors, there must be adequate space for maintaining social distancing. The organizers of such events, public or private, should ensure the presence of buckets, soap and ‘Veronica’ disinfectants, and should insist that customers use them as often as possible.
“I urge all of you to ensure adherence to the improved hygiene and mask use protocols that have become part of our daily routines. This will help us in the fight against the virus, ”he urged.
“I urge everyone to err on the side of caution and observe the Covid-19 security protocols no matter where we are,” the president added.
On the recent approval of Covid-19 vaccines by the United States and the United Kingdom, President Akufo-Addo said the move offered “considerable optimism and hope for the world in our battle to defeat the pandemic.”
He gave his word that “Ghana will not be left behind in access to vaccines,” and assured that the government had assembled a team of experts to ensure the safety, procurement and deployment of Covid-19 vaccines.
Ghana has recorded some 53,954 cases since March, with 52,675 recoveries and 333 deaths.
