Nurses, medical assistants and anesthetists threaten to strike on Monday

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has notified the government that its members and allied associations, including the Ghana Association of Medical Assistants and the Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anesthetists, will withdraw their services as of Monday 21st. September 2020.

According to the association, the decision to threaten to strike is part of their demands to improve the conditions of service.

A statement issued on Thursday, September 17, 2020 by the Association said that the government’s position during the negotiations contradicted Law 651 of the Labor Law, which deals with issues of good faith for interested parties, with which the association appears to have a problem.

The statement jointly signed by the presidents of GRNMA, the Ghana Association of Medical Assistants and the Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anesthetists also directed the general public to seek medical care from other health facilities.

“The employer is hereby notified that registered registered nurses, midwives, medical assistants and anesthetists will withdraw their services as of Monday, September 21, 2020 if they do not address the concerns raised by the GRNMA team,” the statement said.

“All registered registered nurses, midwives, physician assistants (PAs) and anesthetists (CARS) in ALL public institutions are ordered to withdraw their services as of 8:00 am on Monday, September 21, 2020.

“The general public is advised to seek medical attention in other health facilities.”

Following a series of negotiation meetings with the employer and the employer’s position in the ongoing negotiation on the conditions of service for certified registered nurses, midwives, medical assistants and registered anesthetists, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) issued a statement on September 4, 2020 informing the general membership about the Employer’s position contrary to provisions 97 of the 2003 Labor Law (Law 651).

A letter dated 9 September 2020 was also sent to all interested parties informing them of the status of the negotiation and possible actions by GRNMA and its allied associations (Ghana Association of Medical Assistants and Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anesthetists. ).

Having reconvened in meetings held on 15-16 September 2020, the employer’s position changed for the better, but did not meet the expectations of the majority of registered registered nurses, midwives, medical assistants and anesthetists in Ghana.

The GRNMA National Council, in collaboration with its Allied Associations, has thoroughly debated the report of the GRNMA / Allied negotiating team on the Employer’s proposal and concluded the following:

1. The Employer’s proposal, as reported, cannot serve the financial interest of ALL nurses, midwives, PA and CRAS.

2. Employer is hereby notified that registered registered nurses, midwives, medical assistants and anesthetists will withdraw their services as of Monday, September 21, 2020 if they do not address the concerns raised by the GRNMA team.

3. All registered nurses, midwives, physician assistants (PAs) and registered anesthetists (CARS) in ALL public institutions must withdraw their services by 8:00 am on Monday, September 21, 2020.

4. The general public is advised to seek medical attention in other health facilities.
