The National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has advised the ‘okada riders’ not to be fooled by former President John Dramani Mahama’s promise to legalize the okada business.

According to him, Mahama cannot be trusted and that it was his administration that banned okada operations in the country in 2012.

He said that the PNP government does not promise to legalize the okada, but will offer a better alternative to the okada business, to allow many young Ghanaians who are in the okada business to get a decent job.

Speaking at a meeting with okada cyclists and their leadership in the Greater Accra region on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Awuku said that many of the okada cyclists are not doing it because that’s the type of work I wanted to do.

The nuclear power plant government, he said, had promised to offer okada passengers the opportunity to purchase cars and pay in installments as an alternative to okada work.

The national organizer of the New Patriotic Party (PNP), Sammi Awuku, addresses the okada riders and their leaders at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

He said that many of the youth could also enroll in the various government job creation interventions such as Planting for Food and Jobs, NABCO or the various security services, particularly those with the necessary qualifications.

Awuku said that the PNP government, unlike the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC), will not promise anything that the party cannot deliver.

Okada meeting

The meeting with the Okada cyclists and their leaders was to give the Okada cyclists and their leaders an opportunity to express their problems and what they want the government to do for them.

The various leaders of Okada’s motorcycle associations took turns expressing their problems, citing police harassment, licensing and insurance issues as their main obstacles. Therefore, they called on the government to analyze their concerns.

Responding to the appeals of the okada players, Awuku promised that the government will study their complaints, promising that licensing, insurance and police harassment issues will be analyzed.

The event was attended by some of the party’s Greater Accra regional executives, including the Greater Accra regional organizer, Prince Obeng, and the parliamentary candidate for the Korle Klottey constituency, Prince Debrah.

Okada Leaders

Speaking at the event, Greater Accra Okada Jockey Association Secretary David Teye denied allegations that okada jockeys have pledged their support to Mr. Mahama and the NDC party due to the party’s promise to legalize okada’s business.

He said that the okada jockeys association had written to both the nuclear power plant and the NDC to have a meeting with them to allow them to deliberate with them on issues affecting the okada business.

He said that even though Okada’s business had been very helpful, particularly in the area of job creation for young people, industry players are often harassed by the police, so they don’t have the peace of mind of operate.

Mr. Teye appealed to the government to create an enabling environment for the okada business to flourish, as they are only trying to fend for themselves and their families.

The president of the Okada Jockeys Association in Greater Accra, Issah Abubakar, said that many of the young people are doing the okada business due to the lack of job opportunities in the country.

He said if there were jobs in the country, many of the players in the okada business would not.

For his part, the president of the Okada Jockeys Association of Greater Accra, Kabila Mohammed, expressed concern over what he said was a lack of respect for the Okada jockeys by some members of the public, noting that many of Okada riders are graduates and deserved to be respected.

Therefore, he has called on the government to absorb the graduates among themselves in the various security agencies and also fulfill its promise of giving them cars to buy in installments.
