The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), through its lawyers, has written to the Ghana Immigration Service for details on the alleged dual citizenship records of Assin North MP-elect James Quayson.
In a letter to the GIS, NPP attorneys Marfo & Associates said: “We act as attorneys for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and write in accordance with their instructions. We are informed that James Quayson is a Canadian citizen and has a Ghanaian passport ”.
“We would be grateful if you provide us with the following documents as soon as possible: James Quayson’s travel history, certificate of resignation regarding Canadian citizenship prior to filing to challenge Assin North’s parliamentary seat on the National Democratic Congress ticket ( NDC), ”the letter read.
Ghanaian laws do not allow dual citizens to be deputies.
In one such case, Adamu Dramani Sakande, who became a deputy from Bawku Central, was sentenced to two years in prison for that offense by a higher court in 2012.
Meanwhile, the Central Region arm of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said that Quayson does not have dual citizenship.
Speaking to Kofi Oppong Asamoah at 12Live on Class91.3FM on Wednesday December 23, 2020, NDC Central Regional Communication Officer Kwesi Dawood said: “The NDC Member of Parliament elected for Assin North Constituency, Mr. James Joe Quayson, not having any dual citizenship, as we speak. Then the nuclear power plant can go ahead with its fishing expedition, which will be nothing. ”
“But then we, as a party in the region, are also serving you a word of warning that as you seek to sell false information against an honorable member in order to damage your reputation, you must be aware that you can be sued doing so. The Honorable Joe Quayson does not have dual citizenship. I repeat: he does not have dual citizenship ”.
Dawood went on to say that the PNP is “desperately trying to get some seats to form a majority in parliament that they don’t have.”
He also indicated that the PNP initiated the process for the elected deputy to be disqualified from the contest before the December 7 elections.
“The fact is that the Honorable James Joe Quayson, a duly elected Member of Parliament for the Assin North constituency, will be sworn in on January 7, 2021 by established law. He does not have dual citizenship ”.
“The funny thing is that they did this before; Before the presentation of the parliamentary processes, NPP sent a petition to the Electoral Commission; the Electoral Commission did their investigations, but they realized that the man does not have dual citizenship and, then, what is his problem now, “said Dawood.
