Akwatia Constituency MP Mercy Adu Gyamfi popularly known as Ama Sey
Mercy Adu Gyamfi, Member of Parliament for the Akwatia constituency in the eastern region, popularly known as Ama Sey, has given an idea that she will participate in the 2020 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.
Ama Sey, who was seeking a second term, lost the parliamentary primaries in June by four (4) votes to a young legal practitioner Ernest Kumi. The deputy had 223 votes compared to 227 for her main contender.
The deputy suspected manipulation and demanded a recount, however, his demand was rejected.
Team supporters and party polling station executives alleged that some individuals in the party at the national and regional levels planned to rig the elections to favor Ernest Kumi. Since then, they have been pressuring the deputy to run as an independent candidate.
They argue that Ernest Kumi is not known in the constituency, so he cannot be imposed on them.
Since then, the MP has been organizing a series of events to garner more support. At one of his recent public events, he told his team-building supporters that “everyone wants quality stuff, so I urge you all to join me in voting for development in Akwatia on December 7th. I will come to every community. I will come to each house, I will be in each Church and in each group to speak to them. That’s where the real issues will be discussed and in the end there will be victory ”.
In reaction to this development at Nkawkaw-based Agoo FM, the president of the eastern region, Kingston Okomeng Kissi, challenged the MP to become independent.
“I challenge her to be Independent. A member of Parliament with a seat and you want to be independent. Have you heard this before? It can never happen. In all, I blame some of the top NPP gurus in the Region who are pushing it to become Independent. I want to tell you that your plans will fall on your heads. At this time when some of us are busy roaming and campaigning, some people are. They get money to support these things. “
He added: “It is thanks to my hard work that NPP has taken over Akwatia today. I broke NDC Monopoly. I broke that record. At that time, even in my own hometown, Akyem Wenchi, only four houses were PNP, but when I challenged myself as a deputy I changed the narrative and Akyem Wenchi became the NPP stronghold to date. “
The regional president said that president Akufo-Addo spoke with the deputy so that she would not become independent, but she seems inflexible, claiming that she wants to bring division to the party in the electoral district.
“We have done everything possible and have spoken with Ama Sey. Even the president has invited her and talked to her. Our Reconciliation Committee headed by the Paa Kofi Ansong State Council met with her and spoke with her, but she remains adamant. What should we do again? A whole president has spoken to them. He wouldn’t want to reveal what the president told him, but that’s why you would have met the true character of Ama Sey on NPP.
The regional president promised that “I will not allow anyone with a parish interest to let NPP lose Akwatia’s seat to NDC. It will happen on my corpse. Ama Sey wants to bring division into Akwatia NPP but it won’t work by the grace of God. Why should we record skirt and blouse in Akwatia if you are indeed a true NPP member?
