NPP identifies ‘crucial factors’ that explain the lost seats in the Central Region

The New Patriotic Party (PNP) in the Central Region says it has identified some crucial factors that explained the loss of many of its controlled parliamentary seats during the recently concluded elections.

The ruling party attributed the loss to inaccessibility and lack of relationship between its members of Parliament (MP) and their constituents, as well as unfair labor recruitment.

The Party lost nine of its parliamentary seats to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which wiped out 13 of the 23 seats in the Region, nine of which are new, taken from the PNP.

NPP’s Central Regional Communications Director Stephen Amissah, who revealed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Cape Coast, described the loss as “unexpected” and “regrettable”.

Before the 2020 general elections, the ruling PNP had 19 seats, while the opposition NDC had four parliamentary seats in the Region.

Amissah said the Party’s campaign strategy included securing more votes, leading to President Akufo-Addo winning massive votes in 19 constituencies across the Region.

According to him, the electorate voted in their majority for “skirt and blouse” because they felt rejected by their parliamentarians, who said that they were only looking for their personal gains, but strongly denied that assertion.

“Some of the electorates complained of not having access to their parliamentarians, who also said that they had not continued with the projects they started, which made them feel neglected,” he added.

However, Mr. Amissah, refuted MPs’ claims of non-compliance by saying, “Our MPs made remarkable socio-economic gains in their constituencies.”

He said seven unopposed candidates retained their seats except three.

Among them are Ekumfi’s MP and Fisheries Deputy Minister Mr. Kingsley Ato Cudjoe, Mr. Alexander Kodwo Kom, who competed for the Gomoa West position, and Dr. Samuel Joe Acquah for KEEA.

Those who won included; Deputy Efutu, Mr. Alexander Afenyo Markin; The Minister of the Special Development Initiative, Awutu Senya East, Ms Mavis Hawa Koomson; Assin Central Mr. Ken Agyapong, and Assin Sur, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour.

He said that the PNP will soon meet to rethink and regain its political dominance in the Central Region and also annex the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, Agona East and Cape Coast South seats, among others that always lean towards the NDC.

The NPP seats won this year are; Electoral districts of Effutu, Gomoa Central, Mfantseman, Agona West, Assin South, Assin Central, Awutu Senya West, Upper Denkyira East, Abura-Asebu-Kwamang-Kese (AAK) and Hemang-Lower / Denkyira.

The NDC, on the other hand, won, Cape Coast South and North, Ekumfi, Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam (AEE) and Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA),

The remainder are constituencies of Upper Denkyira West, Awutu Senya East, Agona East, Gomoa East and West, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa (AOB), Assin North, and Twifo Atti Morkwa.

The Central Region, considered a changing region, continues to draw surprises during the general elections.
