Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that the Akufo-Addo government will not legalize the ‘Okada’ business.
According to him, although it is a difficult decision to make, the government has had to adopt this position in the highest interest of Ghanaians.
NDC main opposition standard-bearer John Mahama says his government will legalize the commercial operation of motorcycles popularly known as Okada when he is elected to power in 2021.
According to him, the Okada business has become a livelihood for unemployed youth.
Addressing people during his tour of Kpando in the Volta Region, he stated that “our law says that okada is illegal, but it is a reality that is here to stay and cannot be stopped. So, I say when we take office, we legalize it but we will regulate it. “
The former president’s guarantee has generated a lot of excitement among the thousands of Okada cyclists in Ghana and a large number of them have publicly declared that they will vote for the NDC in the general election on December 7.
But speaking at the joint launch of a strategic Volkswagon & Blackivy collaboration to launch the new Volkswagon assembled cars in Ghana, Vice President Dr. Bawumia stated that the government of the nuclear power plant will stand by its resolve to provide a better alternative for passengers. of Okada.
“I know there has been a recent discussion about Okada in Ghana, I think in the context of what we are doing rather we will encourage Okada passengers to come and try to lease these vehicles so that they can run business. They need to graduate from this risky and less safe okada to a safer mode of transportation. Your problem will be the lack of capital, but if you bring new leasing policies and we have our national identification cards with our digital addresses, we can have a working credit system and give you a different option to this risky job.
He added: “You don’t want to finish driving school and then make a living in okada driving. You may have a better option and we will give you a better option. So, yeah, we won’t legalize Okada’s business. It may be a difficult decision, but it is in the interest of Ghanaians. We have had discussions, but we will stand by our decision to provide a better alternative to okada driving. Let’s give them the opportunity to rent vehicles and pay over time.
