The Northeast became the fifteenth region to benefit from the current government policy of building integrated compost recycling plants in all sixteen (16) regions of the country.

The policy, which is a collaboration between the government and Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) and its partners, Komptech, aims to achieve Ghana’s clean agenda.

Regional Minister Mr. Solomon N. Boar, who conducted the short and colorful lawn mowing ceremony and read the keynote address on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in Nalerigu in East Mamprusi Township, said the The execution of the project was with the objective of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3, 8, 11 and 13 of the UN.

According to President Akufo-Addo, sanitation was a shared responsibility, so he urged citizens to participate in activities that improve their environment.

“Community leaders and local government institutions, therefore, must effectively mobilize citizens for collective actions such as behavior change initiatives in promoting basic sanitation to accelerate the socio-economic development of the country,” he urged.

He also asked stakeholders to ensure the timely completion of the project, highlighting that construction must be carried out in accordance with the required standards and specifications.

“The citation of said infrastructure is accompanied by other benefits of social services such as good roads, potable water and extension of electricity that will help improve the local economy,” said President Akufo-Addo.

The President took the opportunity to remind the people of the region to continue observing the COVID-19 protocols, adding that “the fight against Covid-19 continues and my government will continue to implement measures that support the fight. against the pandemic as free water, for any initiative, which has spread since the first six months … “
Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah, whose speech was also read on her behalf, said the project is part of the government’s priority to ensure a clean Ghana.

“This project will help maintain the progress made in the water and sanitation sector,” he said.

Therefore, he expressed his appreciation to Zoomlion for providing vans for the sector and which, he said, have been delivered to the various security agencies for environmental monitoring.

“The ministry will continue to do what is necessary to improve water and sanitation in the country,” he added.

He explained that it will aim to provide a sustainable solution to recover and recycle more than 60% of the organic fraction of waste in compost to boost the agricultural sector and support the Planting Agenda for Food and Jobs.
“Other recyclable materials will also be separated and processed for reuse,” he added.

In addition, he said that the waste treatment plant, when completed, will present the most suitable alternative for the disposal of waste in landfills, deploying the latest technologies in sanitation management, adding that it will serve communities such as Nalerigu East Mamprusi, West Mamprusi , Bunprugu, Yunyoo, Chereponi and other surrounding districts.

According to Ms Larbi, the region generates 100,000 tons of waste a year, adding that most of it goes to landfills, making it dangerous for citizens, adding that the facility has the potential to curb this.

“It is estimated that the projects will cost 15 million euros and will be completed in 4 months,” adding that it will create 250 direct jobs and 1,500 indirect jobs for young people in the region.
